24 of the Fortune 500 have a Chief AI Officer
A figure of 43% circulates on at least nine pages. It traces to one blog post with no method. We checked all 500 companies against press and company evidence.
Key finding
24 of 500 Fortune 500 companies (4.8%) have press or company evidence of a current, enterprise-wide Chief AI Officer. 54 (10.8%) do once fused titles such as Chief Data and AI Officer count, and 68 (13.6%) with divisional holders.
How we counted
For each Fortune 500 company we searched for the title, then ran a second pass for fused titles such as Chief Data and AI Officer, which a plain search for the phrase misses. A person read every cached result. Press releases and company pages counted as evidence. A LinkedIn profile, a vendor page, a directory entry or a conference bio did not count on its own; 39 companies are claimed only by pages like that.
Who has one
Among the 20 largest companies only Meta does, with Alexandr Wang. The 24 include Dell, Target, Boeing, Eli Lilly, Merck, ServiceNow, Workday and eBay. Financial companies stand out once fused titles count: 19 of the 54 are banks, insurers, asset managers, Mastercard or S&P Global.

Where the 43% comes from
The figure traces to one rework.com article that gives no method, sample size or dataset. Nine pages carry its numbers or a similar 40%, and five of those name no source at all.
Limits
This counts job titles, not who leads AI at each company. Twelve more companies had a holder who has left or whose role was folded. For 381 of the 500, no search result and no reader placed a chief AI title at the company, so the 24 is a floor.
