.com fell under half of YC startups in Summer 2022, and .ai reached 37% in Summer 2025
FundingWatcher read the website domain of every company in the Y Combinator directory, batch by batch, from Winter 2011 to Summer 2026. In Winter 2011, 95.5% of the companies with a domain used .com and none used .ai.
The first .ai domains appear in Winter 2014. .com dropped under half for the first time in Summer 2022, at 47.0%, and has stayed between 43.0% and 52.2% since. .ai peaked at 37.0% in Summer 2025 and stood at 26.7% in Summer 2026.
YC added a Fall batch in 2024 and a Spring batch in 2025, so recent years have more points on the chart.
